Chamonix is a remarkable natural destination, welcoming visitors throughout the year and across all four seasons. People come to admire the mountains, explore glaciers, ski in winter, and enjoy the valley’s unique alpine environment.

Protecting this landscape for future generations is essential. Many local businesses, including Chamonix All Year, actively work to reduce their environmental impact. At the same time, the local authorities have made sustainability a central priority. These combined efforts have been recognised through the Flocon Vert, which Chamonix has held since 2013.

What is the Flocon Vert?

The Flocon Vert label was created by Mountain Riders. Its goal is to encourage sustainable development in mountain destinations and to help visitors identify resorts that are genuinely committed to responsible tourism.

Rather than being a one-off award, the Flocon Vert is part of an ongoing improvement process. Destinations are assessed against a broad set of criteria covering governance, the local economy, social and cultural life, and the protection of natural resources. To be recognised, a destination must demonstrate concrete actions and long-term commitment across all of these areas.

Chamonix and the Flocon Vert today

Chamonix was one of the first French mountain destinations to be awarded the Flocon Vert and remains engaged in the programme today. Since the label was introduced, it has expanded significantly, with many mountain resorts across France now taking part.

For Chamonix, the label reflects a wide range of actions led by the valley’s municipalities and local partners. These include policies on energy use, transport, housing efficiency, and environmental protection, as well as initiatives that support local life and culture.

Sustainable transport in the valley

One of the most visible benefits for visitors is Chamonix’s public transport system. Visitors staying in the Chamonix valley receive a guest card, which is included in the tourist tax. This card gives free travel on trains within the valley, between Servoz and Vallorcine, and reduced fares on the local bus network. Using public transport is one of the easiest ways to get around while reducing your environmental impact during your stay.

This system encourages visitors and residents alike to leave their cars behind, helping to reduce congestion and emissions. The valley also continues to invest in cleaner vehicles, cycling infrastructure, and alternative transport solutions.
