Mountain weather can change in an instant — but in Chamonix, a cloudy sky or a rainy afternoon is never a reason to write off the day. The valley is packed with indoor activities and experiences that are worth enjoying whatever the weather, and some of them turn out to be the most memorable moments of your trip.

Good news: many of the activities below are available at a reduced rate with your guest card, which the Chamonix All Year team will hand over when they meet you at your accommodation. In winter, a Mont Blanc Unlimited (MBU) ski pass of 3 to 21 days gets you free entry to all attractions marked with an asterisk *.

Museums and Galleries

From the history of alpinism to sparkling crystals from the heart of the Mont Blanc massif, the valley has a rich cultural and natural heritage worth exploring. There are more than half a dozen museums and galleries to choose from — here are our favourites.

Musée Alpin *

A beautifully curated collection of historic photographs, paintings, artefacts and maps tracing the story of Chamonix — from its early days as an alpine retreat to the birth of skiing and mountaineering. Guided tours are available on Wednesdays at 2:30pm.

89 avenue Michel Croz, 74400 Chamonix

Espace Alpinisme *

An engaging, interactive exhibition that works brilliantly for all ages. Highlights include cutting-edge displays on the history of climbing and, not to be missed, the world’s first climbing simulator. Entry is free for children.

Espace Tairraz, 615 allée du Recteur Payot, 74400 Chamonix

Musée des Cristaux *

Discover the mineral treasures of the Mont Blanc massif, sought after since the Middle Ages by the valley’s famous crystal hunters. With a collection of over 500 pieces — including stunning examples from around the world — it’s a surprisingly captivating visit.

Espace Tairraz, 615 allée du Recteur Payot, 74400 Chamonix

Musée Montagnard * – Les Houches

Housed in a building dating back to 1750, this charming museum brings to life the traditional way of rural Haute-Savoie and the history of Les Houches village. A lovely, unhurried visit with plenty of local character.

Rue de l’Église, 74310 Les Houches

Maison de l’Alpage * – Servoz

One of our personal favourites — made all the better by the train ride to Servoz, which is free with your guest card. The Maison de l’Alpage hosts a varied programme of exhibitions throughout the year, focusing on alpine life and farming traditions in the Mont Blanc region. Entry is free.

Le Bouchet, 74310 Servoz

* Free entry with an MBU ski pass of 3 to 21 days, as part of the Cham’Val offer.

Indoor Climbing

Chamonix has two indoor climbing walls catering to all abilities — from complete beginners to seasoned climbers looking to stay sharp on a rest day.

  • The Centre Sportif Richard Bozon has a bouldering wall right in the heart of Chamonix. Climbing shoes are required.
  • Mont Blanc Escalade in Les Houches offers a beginner rope zone alongside lead routes up to 9a. Pay-as-you-go entry or private and group lessons are available to book.

Cinema

Sometimes a good film in a dark room is exactly what the day calls for. The Cinéma Vox shows a solid mix of French and international films. Look out for screenings marked “VOST” — these are shown in their original language with French subtitles, which is great for English speakers.

Ask the team about any Thursday discount when you arrive. And don’t forget to get your ticket validated before you leave — this gives you free parking in the Saint-Michel and Mont-Blanc underground car parks.

Centre Sportif Richard Bozon

Swimming *, ice skating * and bouldering all under one roof — the Richard Bozon sports centre is one of the best all-weather options in the valley, especially for families with young children.

The pool complex includes an indoor pool with slides, a waterfall, rapids and water jets — hours of entertainment for younger guests. Serious swimmers will appreciate the outdoor Olympic pool, open in summer. There’s even a baby swim session every Saturday in a wonderfully warm pool.

After a session in the water, MBC (Mont Blanc Brewing Co.) just down the road is our top pick for a well-earned craft beer in a relaxed setting.

Please note: men are required to wear fitted swimwear — baggy shorts are not permitted in the pool.

Chamonix Casino

A little James Bond in the Alps, anyone? The Chamonix Casino sits right in the centre of town and welcomes guests for a flutter on Black Jack, Stud Poker, French or English roulette, or the slot machines.

Entry is free for over-18s on production of a valid ID or passport — no dress code required. There’s also a bar and restaurant on site serving drinks and regional specialities, with a lunch menu on weekdays and chef’s specials at the weekend.

Spa Day

When the rain sets in, why not make the most of it and treat yourself? Chamonix and its surrounding area has some wonderful wellness spas — from ice caves and wood-fired saunas to Nordic baths and full treatment menus.

Just across the Italian border in Courmayeur, the Pré-Saint-Didier Spa is outstanding value: entry includes use of a robe, towel, flip-flops and a lovely buffet of healthy snacks, breads, herbal teas and juices. Swimwear is essential — though you can buy a costume on arrival if needed. A genuinely fuss-free spa day.

Karaoke – BAM Karaoké Box

Opened in March 2025, BAM Karaoké Box is Chamonix’s newest and most entertaining rainy day escape. Private soundproofed booths, a catalogue of over 45,000 songs, signature cocktails and a seriously fun atmosphere make it a brilliant option for groups, celebrations or simply letting loose after a soggy day on the mountain. Booking ahead is strongly recommended.

Shopping

Chamonix’s main streets are home to a great mix of sport and fashion boutiques, from big international brands to local independents. It’s also the perfect opportunity to stock up on Savoyard specialities — aged cheeses, charcuterie, local spirits and handmade chocolates. Check whether there’s a market on during your stay for an even more authentic experience.

In-Chalet Massage

Not in the mood to venture out at all? Several excellent massage therapists offer home visits directly to your apartment or chalet. Choose from a sports massage to ease tired muscles after a long day on the slopes, or a relaxation treatment to properly recharge. A genuinely indulgent way to make the most of your accommodation on a quieter day.

Chamonix Library

Located at 99 route de la Patinoire, Chamonix’s modern mediatheque holds close to 50,000 titles across literature, science, arts, DVDs and music — plus a children’s library and games room. Ask about a temporary three-week card to borrow books and DVDs during your stay.

The children’s library at 1273 route des Pèlerins is also well worth a visit for younger guests.

Outdoor Activities — Even in the Rain

Still determined to get outside? Here are our best tips for enjoying the valley without getting completely soaked:

  • Rafting and canyoning — If you’re going to get wet, commit to it. Rafting and canyoning are excellent in any weather, and there’s always a hot shower waiting at the base afterwards.
  • Forest walks below the treeline — Staying in the trees gives you natural shelter from the rain. The valley’s forested balcony paths and low-level trails are perfect for a peaceful, sheltered walk.
  • Wine and cheese tasting in Italy — Head through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Courmayeur. Even if the weather follows you over the border, you’ll be far too busy enjoying Italian wine and local cheeses to notice.

Chamonix — Whatever the Weather

As you can see, a rainy day in Chamonix is never a wasted one. Whether you’re here with family, friends or as a couple, the valley always has something to offer — even when the mountains are hiding in the clouds.

And when the sun comes back out, your Chamonix All Year chalet or apartment is the perfect base to head straight back into the action. Our local team is available seven days a week to help you make the most of your stay, whatever the forecast.
